What we do in Chiswick

Our building and development services in W4

We have delivered high-specification homes across West London for over twenty years, first as West Space and now as Bright Space, including our Printworks conversion here in W4. Chiswick rewards a builder who can move between a strict garden-suburb aesthetic, large family houses and listed riverside stock, and hold the same standard across all three.

Local knowledge

Working with Chiswick's buildings

Chiswick covers a wide range in a small area: the red-brick Queen Anne houses of Bedford Park, the large Victorian and Edwardian villas of Grove Park, the terraces and mansion flats off Chiswick High Road, and the Georgian riverside houses along Chiswick Mall and Strand-on-the-Green. There is a good deal of 1930s stock too, so no two streets ask for quite the same approach.

That range suits the work we are known for: extensions and loft conversions that give a family house more room, full refurbishment of period and riverside homes, converting and reconfiguring flats, and the structural work older buildings need once they are opened up. Where a former commercial building comes up, as with our Printworks scheme, we convert it into apartments.

Planning

Planning and conservation in Hounslow

Chiswick sits under Hounslow Council, and parts of W4 are as tightly controlled as anywhere in London. Bedford Park is one of the most protected conservation areas in the country, with hundreds of listed buildings and its own design guidance, and the Chiswick Mall, Strand-on-the-Green and Grove Park conservation areas add further controls along the river and beyond. Article 4 directions remove some permitted-development rights.

So the design has to answer to the setting. We prepare and run the planning applications, secure conservation-area and listed-building consent where a scheme needs it, and obtain Lawful Development Certificates for what is already permitted. On a Bedford Park or riverside property that means matching the original detail closely, which is exactly the ground we work on.

Hounslow Council planning

On the ground

Matching Bedford Park and the Chiswick riverside

On the ground

The parts of Chiswick people picture first are also the hardest to build in. Bedford Park was the first garden suburb, and its red-brick houses, white-painted joinery, tile-hung gables and specific window patterns are protected street by street. A scheme there lives or dies on the detail: matching brick and mortar, replacing windows like for like, and keeping the roofline and front garden as the conservation guidance sets out. We work to that standard rather than around it.

Along Chiswick Mall and Strand-on-the-Green the stock turns Georgian and much of it is listed, with the added complication of a tidal river at the door. There the work leans towards careful repair, damp and structural remedies, and internal changes that leave the historic fabric intact. We survey the building first, agree with Hounslow what can and cannot change, and plan the works around river access and flood-resilient detailing where it matters.

Questions

Builders in Chiswick: common questions

Do you work in Chiswick and the W4 area?

Yes. We have already completed a scheme in W4, our Printworks conversion, and Chiswick is part of our core West London patch alongside Acton, Hammersmith and Brentford. We take on extensions, conversions, refurbishments and structural work across the area.

Do you build extensions and loft conversions in Chiswick?

Yes. Rear and side extensions and loft conversions are among the most common ways to add space to Chiswick's family houses. We handle the design, the planning and the build, and we detail the work to suit the street.

Can you work on a Bedford Park or riverside property?

Yes. Bedford Park and the Chiswick Mall and Strand-on-the-Green riverside are heavily protected, with listed buildings and strict design guidance. We manage conservation-area and listed-building consent and match the original detail closely, from brickwork to joinery.

Do you convert commercial buildings into flats in Chiswick?

Yes. Our Printworks scheme in W4 converted a former print works into five apartments. We manage the change of use and the full build, and we have delivered conversions of five to eight units in and around West London.

Can you handle Hounslow planning and conservation consent?

Yes. Much of W4 sits within a conservation area under Hounslow Council. We manage planning applications, conservation-area and listed-building consent and Lawful Development Certificates, and design each scheme around what the council will approve.

How do you price a project in Chiswick?

Costs in W4 depend on the building, so a loft on a Grove Park villa and a listed riverside refurbishment are quoted very differently. We work as principal contractor with detailed, itemised pricing, and we allow for conservation-grade finishes and period repairs where the property needs them. Send us the property and what you have in mind, and we will arrange an appraisal and a quote.

Which nearby areas do you also cover?

We work right across West London, including Acton and Ealing, Hammersmith and Brook Green, Brentford and Kew, and Barnes across the river, as well as the wider W and TW postcodes.
